The political and economic environment of Bulgaria appears to be improving gradually and there is more and more optimism on the part of the population about the prospects for increased economic growth. However, decisive reforms are still necessary.
The drug market, especially for imports, is highly dependent on the general economic situation. The share of imported drugs is growing steadily, mainly due to increased government orders. The extremely cheap, locally produced drugs barely cover basic care. Thus the need for imported pharmaceuticals is strong, and the political and general economic improvement does translate into an increased demand. Bulgaria has received substantial support from the World Bank and the EU to finance drug supplies.
Potential participants in this market can take advantage of regulatory conditions, which, at the moment, are still very favourable.
